Wednesday 10 September 2014 - Castellammare

Today isn’t really suitable for a sailing blog as we are sightseeing.  I have a terrible night coughing all the time and getting little sleep.  But we still manage to get out of the boat by 8:30 am to get to Pompeii.  We walk halfway across the town to the railway station only to discover it is the wrong station.  The one we want is closer to the boat!  It is called the Circumvesuviana.  Now you are probably more clever than me, but it has take me half a day to realize it means going around Vesuvius!

So when we get to the right station we buy remarkably cheap tickets and are on our way.

We arrive at Pompeii by 9:30, so we have a very long day doing as much as we can.  It has a lot more to see than when we were here 35 years ago.  On the other hand a lot of the exhibits are closed for renovation, which is a bit frustrating.  But we have had a really good day, if exhausting.  For those of you who care, my Nike Band says I’ve amassed Fuel of just over 4800 and done just under 13,200 steps!  So no wonder we are tired.

We have supper on the boat.  I have finally found a butcher here, but he had run out of calves liver, so my Fegato Veneziana will have to wait for another day.

The weather has turned a bit.  It was very hot and sunny all day, but hazy again.  We did however, finally see Vesuvius in the distance beyond Pompeii.  But now on the boat it has started to rain and the forecast is for some rain tomorrow.  Not sure where we will go.  We thought of Capri until we read that it is the most expensive marina in the world, so we will give that a miss.
